Researching today’s topic, I came across a reddit thread discussing video summaries with AI. One link was to a site called summarize.tech. It’s a pretty simple front end where users can provide a url to any Youtube video and within seconds be prompted with a written summary.

The first Youtube video I chose was from the official Formula 1 account – an 8 minute summary of last week’s Italian GP. Overall, I was impressed with the write up. One major drawback was the summary did tend to get some names wrong, as it may have been thrown off by the announcers pronunciation of the drivers’ first and last names. Shane Sains seems to be Carlos Sainz’s alter ego and took the wheel for Ferrari, but for the most part we were provided a credible write up.

Next I wanted to try something with a bit more depth content-wise. I’ve always been a huge podcast fan. The shows in my lineup range across industry and interests: comedy, tech, markets, interviews, golf, hockey, and more. One of my favorite podcasts is Acquired. Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal undergo deep dives on successful companies taking listeners on a 3-6 hour journey from origin of idea to modern day. An episode I recently finished was a 3 hour deep-dive into Costco Wholesale and decided this would be what we would use to check out the tool’s effectiveness on larger files:

Summarize.tech did an excellent job of breaking down the 3 hour podcast into hour long sections with high-level summaries. From there, a “see more” button expanded into 5 minute breakdowns for more depth. Overall, I’m extremely impressed with this tool and could see a major use case being if one wanted to parse through a specific podcast for a 5 minute clip they really liked and wanted to revisit.
